Liver cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis is a chronic, progressive liver disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, leading to permanent liver damage and reduced liver function. Early diagnosis and proper management can slow progression and prevent complications.


Causes of Liver Cirrhosis

Common causes

  • Chronic alcohol consumption 🍺

  • Chronic viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B & C)

  • Fatty liver disease (NAFLD / NASH)

  • Autoimmune hepatitis

Other causes

  • Bile duct diseases (primary biliary cholangitis)

  • Genetic disorders (Wilson’s disease, hemochromatosis)

  • Long-term drug or toxin exposure

  • Chronic heart failure (cardiac cirrhosis)


Symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis

Early-stage (often mild or absent)

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea

  • Weight loss

Advanced-stage symptoms

  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)

  • Ascites (fluid accumulation in abdomen)

  • Swelling of legs and feet

  • Easy bruising or bleeding

  • Itching

  • Confusion or drowsiness (hepatic encephalopathy)

  • Vomiting blood or black stools (variceal bleeding)
