Fatty Liver

Fatty Liver Disease is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in liver cells. It is increasingly common and often reversible in early stages with lifestyle changes.


Types of Fatty Liver Disease

1. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

  • Occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol

  • Strongly linked to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome

2. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD)

  • Caused by excessive alcohol consumption

  • Can progress to hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure if untreated


Causes & Risk Factors

  • Overweight or obesity

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • High cholesterol or triglycerides

  • Excess alcohol intake 🍺

  • Poor diet (high sugar, refined carbs, fried foods)

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • Rapid weight loss

  • Certain medications


Symptoms

Fatty liver often has no early symptoms. When present, symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Right upper abdominal discomfort

  • Loss of appetite

  • Mild nausea

  • Unexplained weight loss (advanced cases)
